Hello, I am a grandson of Launch 5 designer Philip Rhodes. I just wanted to make contact with you all, this is a wonderful site to a very brave NYPD fallen hero. I think Phil would have been proud his design was restored and used to honor the memory of Patrolman Walburger.
BTW, I worked at Ground Zero in the days following the attacks so it pleases me greatly to see #5 was involved in the recovery work and subsequent memorials of that tragic day.
This is a wonderful site for my family, it helps to keep alive not only the memory of Patrolman Walburger, but that of Philip Rhodes and one of his designs as well.

Thanks very much!

Hi Family! Yes we are all related and have lots in common. Portteus' are avid drinkers, skiers, boaters etc. My wife, Marilyn and I have been married for 33 years and own Portteus Vineyards and Winery in south central Washington State. We just shipped some wine to you! I built my first boat at age 14, sailed and raced a 27 foot Blanchard during my college years, bought a Moody 40 in 98 then traded for a Grand Banks 42 classic in 2000 which we just sold. My grandpa was NY Coast Guard until he bet the payroll at the track! His son Paul (Portteus) Kauttu ( born out of wedlock later adopted by Mr Kauttu when his mom married him)Is ret. brig. general, AirForce. He was Captain of the Thunderbirds for 4 years and now lives in Spanaway, WA. Thought you might enjoy a quick catch up on the west coast family. Basically neurotic overachievers! Paul Portteus

Greg and crew- since 1982 after I got out of the air force I have been boating on the Hudson, over the years I have been involved in many incidents or mishaps on the Hudson river( not involved myself but helping out). Because of the lack of experience of many recreational boaters the mishaps will continue to happen. Over the years I have often said that more emergency responders are needed out there and I have even tried to get the supervisors of my local fire dept. to recognize the fact that we are indeed needed out there. I am out there many times at night fishing and sometimes feel that I have the river to myself and i know that if for whatever reason I needed help that people like you will be there. your web site is great and I really hope that you all continue to do what you have been doing out there. as an emergency responder myself in a city, a small community and the air national guard I do know how important that you and your crew are to the Hudson valley-keep up the good work and be safe! It was Sunday, August 7th, when my Uncle took his wife, his e-bay partner, my daughter, her boyfriend, and me on his boat for a short early evening swim. We were heading out to the other side of Croton Point Park from Shattemuc. Before we knew it, the propeller hit bottom because the water was too shallow. We were stuck. Luckily the radio worked and within minutes of sending the distress call, 3 wonderful men, Greg, Jim, and Phil, came to our rescue and even lent me a cell phone so that I could call my landlubber son. They managed to keep straight faces and not laugh at us for our self-imposed misfortune. They were friendly and helpful and kept our spirits up while we waited for a tow. Hats off to the Coast Guard Auxillary out of Shattemuc! They deserve good things!

Excellent DVD!! It was very informative and entertaining. It's nice to know that the Hudson is patrolled by such a motivated group of volunteers. It's also very inspiring to see the results of the years of hard work. What was once scuttled is now providing a service, both in safety and in preserving our history. I look forward to checking out Launch 5 more closely.

As a marine biologist here in Woods Hole I now have a much better appreciation for the incredible work performed by the Coast Guard Auxillary. The December 2004 PassageMaker magazine article is what brought me to your website. I want to commend you and your crew and a job well done. It is great to see so many people involved in such a worthwhile project. I am originally from Throgs Neck in the Bronx (The four-five), and many times in my younger years, the mid and late 70's to be specific, I had to call NYPD Harbor units to tow me and my boat back to my marina....maybe your dad and I had met one of those times. They were always willing to lend a hand and to them I will be forever grateful. Good luck with this project and hopefully the memory of Patrolman Wallburger will live on for many more years. Like my brothers and sisters in the NYPD auxiliary police, you don't get the recognition you deserve. I have passed your website on to guys I know in NYPD auxiliary harbor. Congrats to all on a job well done; Happy holidays to all...it's Christmas Eve.

Fantastic story... I was alerted to this Site by another CG Auxiliary member who is also a NYPD Auxiliary Police Officer. Seems he knows Bill Smith and through a series of conversations realized that Bill knows me through another friend. I haven't seen Bill since 1978. I love this story. As an admitted POLICE BUFF and lover of all things antique I am very happy and pround that you were able to salvage this fine vessel. Greg, Always remember the difference you are making in people's lives with this Launch. There are a number of these same fifty two footers around in various states of repair and disrepair but all locked up in private or utilitarian uses. The manner in which you make this boat so available to all past and present NYPD Harbor members is truly admirable.

And it's not just "making it available". You are really keeping it "in the family". As awesome as it is that Launch 5 represents the spirit of Henry Walburger, it's much more than that. It represents significant parts of the lives of anyone who served on any one of that launch's vintage. This really hit home to me when I observed the look on Lt. Walker's face yesterday when she laid eyes on the Launch after 15 years.

Not everyone who served will look back as fondly - or even care. But for those who do, you are playing an invaluable role. You are helping to keep a precious culture alive. And I know you won't stop there. You will not be content to keep it in the family. You are expanding that family by providing a gathering place and showcase for a culture which will inevitably attract people with the same values as our fathers and the others that truly appreciate what it meant to be part of that Unit.

Semper Vivo !

Hi Greg........we met last winter at the lodge at Jiminy Peak (my daughter was snowboarding). Since we spoke I bravely got on a pair of skis and did, indeed, make it up to the top of Jiminy Peak!! Unfortunately my daughter missed a turn-off and we ended up going down one of the more difficult trails rather than the beginner one. Since I had so much fun and regained my confidence as a skier, I spent the weekend at Stratton Mountain with my daughter and husband skiing for two straight days. How far I've come!! So, nice website and maybe I'll see you on the slopes next season! Kathy (Did you seek further information about the name "Kavanagh"?)

I served in the 9th Pct with Ptl Walburger's son Scott during the late 80's and early 90's. His father's face was on the wall behind the desk, and a roll call didn't go by that I didn't think about the terrible sacrifice made by Scott's father. The fact that this boat has been restored is a wonderful honor to the entire walburger family as well as the NYPD Family.

As one of the capt's at the Staten Island landfill I worked with Henry jr. for many weeks during the WTC recovery project under horrible conditions. Henry played a major role in facilitating the recovery effort, that would have made his father very proud. I had no knowledge of his fathers tragic death,it was never brought out. I love the history and current service of Launch 5! It is due to the vision and focus of Greg Porteus that this vessel was lifted from the foggy bottom, renovated with care and made available for important homeland security missions. The Henry Walburger now flys the flags of the US and Coast Guard, carries qualified captain and crew, and can be seen patrolling the waters of the Hudson River, NY Harbor and Long Island Sound. It is a thrill to see such a sturdy and worthy working vessel watching our shores and looking out for the welfare of our citizens. Elizabeth S. Blee, Lt. My cousin Greg and all the crew have completed a difficult project for which they all should be very proud. This fine craft stands as a tribute not only to Patrolman Walburger who was killed in the line of duty but to all members of the NYPD who have made the ultimate sacrifice. For this tribute and for all the hard work all of us in the NYPD, both active and retired are extremely grateful. Let us not forgot these heroes and their families. Thank you! God bless and god speed to you all.

It was my honor to serve as electrical installer aboard Launch 5. I love the boat. As an ironic twist, it was discovered that Henry Walburger Jr. and I attended high school classes together on Staten Island. Henry, I remember you well. This vessel is a testemonial to the immeasurable dedication of Greg Porteus, and all of us who served to restore the craft. May she continue to serve the public for many years to come, in the memory of Patrolman Henry Walburger.
