This year was a big year for Launch 5. She went to fleet week, the tug boat round up, and made a special appearance on NBC's Law & Order. This year was also the year that Launch 5 started to make a name for herself in the Hudson Valley for the rescue work that she did.
During Fleet Week (May 21st -May 28th, 2003) the U.S. Navy requested the use of Launch 5 as a platform for filming footage for a movie they were producing.
A 30 foot long professional camera boom was installed on Launch 5. This boom was fitted with a video camera mounted with a gyro-stabilized gimbal. Greg, Pilot, took the film crew around New York Harbor as they filmed various Naval vessels arriving for fleet week.
Later this year, in September, Launch 5 was invited to participate in the fifth annual Tugboat Roundup in Waterford, NY. After gathering in Albany to form a parade with the other tugs, the parade proceeded North through the Troy (Federal) Lock and on to Waterford where they tied up for festivities and public viewing.
On October 19, 2003 Launch 5 was honored to host Congresswoman Sue Kelly on patrol in the Hudson River. Captain Daniel R. Croce & Commander James L. Munro from the US Coast Guard, Ossining Police Chief Kenneth Donato and Judge Daniel McCarthy were also on board. News 12 Westchester rode with us and aired a great 2 minute spot narrated by Antoinette Biordi.
On November 12, 2003, Launch 5 made a special appearance in the opening scene of Season 14, Episode 7 of Law & Order on NBC. Check out the video below:
